Conflict happens in all areas of life and is unavoidable.
What matters is how we respond to conflict.
Join others in similar situations and with similar concerns to you at our Workshops.
They are designed to help you develop your communication skills and conflict resolution skills so that you can create effective ways of responding which:
a)Support you and....
b)Maximise the chances of resolving a difficult situation.
If a conflict continues unresolved or has escalated this will be because the responses have become destructive.
Hillingdon Community Mediation has over 9 years of experience in supporting people in destructive conflict. The lessons learned from our involvement in these situations informs our training and the Workshops described on this page.
These workshops will help you to feel more able to deal with conflict when it arises, even to welcome it as an opportunity to learn and grow and move forward from situations that have stagnated or become a continuous source of stress.

The following workshops are available from Hillingdon Community Mediation:
Workshop 1: Learning from difficult relationships - Choose from:
At this workshop you will learn the Principles that can guide you in communicating effectively and constructively and which support the resolution of conflict.
Workshop 1 is the foundation workshop that has to be attended before attendance at Workshops 2 or 3.
It is important that participants have spent some time understanding the Principles of Effective Communication on which all the workshops are based and this workshop provides the introduction to these Principles.
"I didn't expect to have all this information in one day. Well done!"
HR - participant in Workshop 1
"Eye Opening!"
KR - participant in Workshop 1
"I feel I can use this....to empower me in my daily life."

Difficult relationships can be an opportunity for learning. Even if the present situation is thought to be beyond repair (and this course may lead you to decide it is not), just forgetting about it and putting it in the past may mean the same kind of problem arises again in the future. Unless we can learn from it.
Workshop 1 goes through the Principles of Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution that underpin the practice of mediation.
Learning from our experience of conflict through reference to these Principles helps us to understand:
- how it happened,
- what we can do differently in the future if similar situations occur, and...
- how we can accept conflict as inevitable and use it as an opportunity for learning.
Workshops 2 and 3 can be taken in any order once Workshop 1 has been taken
Workshop 2: Effective Communication Skills -
You may not actually be in a destructive conflict situation, but may be interested in developing your communication skills in ways that are constructive responses to conflict situations and which maintain connection with others, irrespective of their approach to communication.
What would you say was the main benefit of attending the workshop?
"To reinforce the effectiveness of asking questions in order to understand another person and to accept that you cannot know their feelings or experience of it, only your own."

Awareness of the Principles of Effective Communication and the underlying thinking behind conflict resolution practice, together with the application of these to the communication skills we will be looking at in this workshop leads to greater rapport and connection between us.
In this workshop you will:
• Learn to recognise how our simple day to day interactions can cause a distancing between ourselves and others when we do not take the Principles into consideration.
• Learn how easy it is to become aware of these Principles.
• Experience the challenge of applying the Principles to simple interactions through the communication skills developed on this course.
For more information about the Principles of Effective Communication and Conflict Resolution and the thinking that will underlie the workshops, visit the Communication and Conflict website.
Workshop 3: Learning to Grow through Conflict -
This workshop will look at the three different ways in which conflict is approached and why two of the approaches never lead to resolution.
By learning to identify which category our behaviours fall into we can see when we are approaching conflict in a way that can lead to growth and when we are approaching it in a way that will never achieve this and is, instead, likely to lead to stagnation in our lives and even escalation of the negative consequences of our unresolved conflict.
"The variety of activities (including background music) enhanced the learning and kept me aware.

The workshop will enable you to stand back from disagreements, disputes, complaints and criticism and then to make a considered response that supports you and promotes the resolution of the situation instead of simply 'reacting' to it.
This workshop will be of interest if you feel overwhelmed by conflict or would like to be able to feel more accepting of the inevitability of conflict, so that it can then be recognised as an opportunity for learning and growth.
"..helped me become ready to deal with a domestic conflict."

The workshop can help you to feel more confident, reassured and comfortable in conflict situations rather than fearful or aggressive or whichever other difficult emotion arises for you in such situations.
What are the Workshops like?
All the workshops are experiential, drawing upon the experiences of those in the group via small group work, pair work, whole group discussions and activities. These are all designed to promote effective communication and to understand how this assists in the creative resolution of conflict.
Where are the Workshops being held?
St Andrew's Church Centre, Mount Park Road, Ealing, London, W5 2RS (click on post code for map of venue)
St Andrew's Church Centre is very close to Ealing Broadway station which is accessible from London Paddington Station by overland train and is also on the District and Central Underground lines. Various buses also stop close by.

What other training is there?
You may want to go on to do our 3 day course on Supporting others in Resolving Conflict: Managing conflict in our own environment.
This is a course that teaches you basic Conflict Resolution and Conflict Management skills. It will be of use in any situations in which you find yourself where you may not be directly in dispute with someone else but you may be aware of, or even affected by, a dispute between others and want to assist them in resolving it. This may be a personal situation or a professional situation.
The 3 days will give you plenty of opportunity to review the situation, learn from others’ situations and explore the skills and practices used by mediators to support people in resolving their disputes.
Please contact Alan if you are interested in other types of training from Hillingdon Community Mediation.
